A Battersea presenter has received an award which recognises her work with the Chinese community.

Alice Yu, or DJ Alice, of Spectrum Radio was presented with the Inspire Award at the annual GG2 Leadership Awards, a gala event attended by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and First Secretary of State Damian Green.

Ms Yu arrived in the United Kingdom as a student in the early 1980s as a teacher and taught English before moving into the media industry.

She volunteered at the BBC and set up her own commercial radio station for her community.

The presenter has been in media for nearly 30 years, since 1990 and is said to be a strong advocate for more active participation in British life.

Ms Yu has also fundraised for charities and helped commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s independence from Great Britain with an event at Allianz Park in north London.

Damian Green said: “Initiatives such as the GG2 Leadership Awards truly celebrate the diversity of our country. I am delighted to be here today to congratulate some extraordinary people who are making a huge difference to the world of politics, business, media and beyond.”

Shailesh Solanki, executive editor of the GG2 Power List, added: “It’s fantastic to see so much ethnic success in Britain. There are a lot of strong, influential and powerful people whose hard work goes unrecognised.

“These awards ceremonies are highly significant as it’s incredibly important for us to keep recognising and rewarding ethnic achievements in the country.”

The GG2 Leadership Awards were held on Thursday, October 26, and the initiative is now in its 19th year, aiming to highlight ethnic talent and leadership within the United Kingdom.
