A teacher training course that has been running in Sutton for two years has been rated as "outstanding'" by Ofsted inspectors.

School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) is led by Glenthorne High School and provides coaching for teachers in Sutton secondary schools.

According to the head teacher of Glenthorne, Steve Hume, the programme has made "a significant impact on teacher recruitment in Sutton and helping to overcome the acute teacher shortage in the area".

He added that the "vast majority" of trainees go on to become teachers in Sutton.

Ofsted rated the Sutton SCITT as outstanding in the four categories of effectiveness, trainee outcomes, quality of training and quality of leadership.

Mr Hume said: "This is a tremendous achievement for the SCITT after just over two years in operation and an achievement for all Sutton Secondary Schools as they have all contributed in some way by training teachers, providing teacher placements and mentors.

"Our partnership has been excellent and it’s really making a difference for Sutton children."

Ofsted inspected the Sutton SCITT on September 25 with the report now being made public.

They concluded that "outcomes for trainees are outstanding" because of a continuous review and evaluation.

The inspection added: "By the end of the course the majority of trainees demonstrate excellent practice in meeting the Teacher Standards."

Later in the report it said: "SCITT leaders provide exceptional levels of support for all trainees and especially those who need extra help. Staff in placement schools and SCITT leaders are vigilant to indications that trainees are having difficulties with the demands of the course.

"The prompt and very helpful interventions that are put in place highlight the value of close communications across the partnership.

"SCITT leaders know trainees very well so there is a personalised approach to enabling trainees to fulfil their potential."

Glenthorne High School confirmed that it is expanding SCITT to train primary school teachers from September onwards.
