Sutton residents are falling into debt faster than people in other parts the UK, figures show.

Data from Creditfix – an insolvency practice - found the average debt of individuals in Sutton has had a quarter-on-quarter increase of 11.2 per cent to £16,345 in one of the biggest regional swings in the UK.

Executive chairman of Creditfix, Pearse Flynn, said: “It is troubling to see so many people are continuing to struggle with their personal finances.

“People are having to borrow more, often just to make-ends-meet. The ease, availability and widespread access to credit from banks and credit card companies is only facilitating this cycle.

“With so many people relying on debt, we could be headed for troubling times if the UK economy struggles and lending is reeled in.”

He added that speaking to friends, family or seeking professional advice are the best solutions to slipping into money trouble.

One professional outfit dedicated to wiping out your debt is Christians Against Poverty (CAP).

Rona Forzani, a debt coach for CAP in Sutton, told Sutton Guardian that rising living standards, stagnant wages and the Universal Credit process are all factors for financial difficulty.

She said: "We are the only service that sees people right the way through to being debt free.

"It is about delivering a service where people feel whole again. It is not just about getting you out of debt for you to get back into it.

“Our support helps educate and build you into what has been knocked out of your life.”

An introduction meeting is firstly offered to those who seek help. CAP will get to know the person before speaking about their financial situation. Traces of income, outgoings and their debt will be discussed. Up to date paperwork will then be sought for a second meeting.

Ms Forzani made clear that people can walk away at any moment from their free advice sessions.

She added: "Some people are broken and it is a mammoth task for them to get help. Every Tuesday we hold a free service where people can come meet other people and they are given refreshments and they can use our technology."

An eight week job course to give people the skills to find employment is also freely offered.

Ms Forzani has worked for CAP for two years and said changing people's lives makes everyday worth it.
