A Merton ward councillor will be hosting a motivational film and discussion event to help educate the community about Black History Month.

Cllr Joan Henry, who represents Pollards Hill ward, will be supported by the Jimmy Asher Foundation in the event which will take place at Pollards Hill Library this Saturday (October 28) from 11-4pm.

Cllr Henry, who has been hosting the event for three years, said: “Although we celebrate Black History all year round in October when it’s highlighted in the UK, we feel it’s important to support events like this which open up a dialogue about history and help to educate the whole community.”

She added: " We continue to engage and follow the journey of Black History, because black people have made many changes throughout the world and still very little have been mentioned.

"This and all the other events always highlights Black Heroes, struggles, slavery and achievement.It is Educational and knowledge base, we will be sharing life journey of Marcus Garvey, Bon Marley and many others. We hope everyone attends will learn about Black History from this event."

Guest speakers will include Hon. Prophet Newton, Dr Abo Jahata and Captain Jason Davis.
