Croydon Council has had to spend £3 million of its budget to prevent tenants from being evicted.
During a meeting to discuss the Universal Credit rollout, of which Croydon Council was one of the first areas in the country to see the early rollout, Jeremy Corbyn said how it was unfair that councils were "forced to pick up the bill."
"I’ll give you an example, Croydon Council which piloted the scheme is now spending £3 million of its own budget to prevent tenants from being evicted due to rent arrears caused by Universal Credit," he said.
"Does the Prime Minister think it’s right or fair that hard pressed local authorities, having their budget cut by central government."
Members of the Croydon Labour Part have taken to social media to voice their concerns over the discovery.
