The youngest ever patient to undergo an operation at St George’s Hospital turns one tomorrow.

Abi Peters was born extremely prematurely at 23 weeks on October 26 last year.

She needed emergency surgery at just six days old, weighing slightly more than a pound of sugar.

After her birth at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, Abi was transferred to the neonatal unit at St George’s Hospital for specialist care.

The emergency surgery, which carried a “high risk of death”, was performed to correct perforated necrotizing entercolitis (NEC), a severe gut condition that affects pre-term babies.

The tiny baby’s intestine had ruptured in three places making her severely unwell as her abdomen had become infected.

However, after a successful operation in which part of her intestine was removed, Abi spent 124 nights in hospital and got back on track. She celebrated her due date on February 19.

Abi’s mum Louise shared the family’s story at the St George’s Annual Members Meeting’ in September this year.

She said: “It has been an incredibly challenging year, and one that we will never forget.

“We have experienced so many highs and lows as a family, so to be celebrating Abi’s birthday this week means a huge amount to us, and we remain forever grateful to the NHS and the wonderful care we’ve received.”

Paediatric surgeon Mr Zahid Mukhtar, who carried out the operation with his team, said it was “fantastic” to see how well Abi is doing.

He said: “Abi’s chances of survival without surgery were so small that we agreed operating was her only option.

“To see her doing so well, and celebrating her first birthday, is great for everyone connected with her case.”
