HM Prison Wandsworth has the second highest number of staff suspensions or dismissals in England and Wales in the last three years, figures show.

Thirty two employees faced action between January 2013 and March 2016, which is more than any other London prison.

Wormwood Scrubs Prison had the second most with 27, followed by Pentonville (21), Belmarsh (19), Feltham (18), Isis (11), Brixton (3) and Holloway (0).

HM Prison Manchester saw 34 staff either suspended or dismissed and Wandsworth was closely followed by Hewell in Worcestershire (31).

The data was acquired from the Ministry of Justice under Freedom of Information laws, and was updated this month after being first published in August this year.

Nationally, there were 420 cases of prison staff facing disciplinary hearings for breaches of security in both 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016, while there were 245 cases of unprofessional conduct and 87 cases of assault or unnecessary use of force on a prisoner.

A total of 862 cases resulted in a verbal or written warning followed by 222 dismissals and 81 faced no formal action.

The information was also obtained from the Ministry of Justice under Freedom of Information laws.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “The majority of prison staff behave professionally and in line with a strict code of conduct.

“Any allegations of misconduct are taken extremely seriously, and we will not hesitate to take action where there is evidence of wrongdoing.”
