“He made advances on me later on and I had to leave. I was on the freeway on my own facing the night trying to figure out what to do.”

Rob Howe, 30, from Sutton, has published a book about his sail across the Atlantic and his travels through America.

The Atlantic sail – which started in November 2013 – lasted 19 days before Rob left the other sailors to explore the world by himself.

He stayed in Saint Lucia for the new year before travelling across the United States.

Three months later, sitting in a San Francisco park, Rob decided to write a book about his experiences.

He told Sutton Guardian: “I have always been a writer from when I was a teenager but I never took it seriously.

“It was only when I was in San Francisco, where all the beat writers lived and hung out, when I committed to writing the book.”

The Morden referral teacher has now published ‘Being An Explorer’ and he hopes people will gain a different perspective after reading it.

He said: “The book should give people an experience and offer them an opportunity to maybe think and see things differently in a way they have not done before.

“I want it to inspire some questions in the reader they otherwise might not have thought to ask.”

Rob’s voyage also took him to Miami, New Orleans and Los Angeles.

The new author told Sutton Guardian about the time he ended up in Miami with no plan of where to stay for the night.

“I had spent a few days partying in the city and my hostel was fully booked for the night.

“I was trying to figure out what to do and I started chatting to a guy outside. He told me to stay with him the next day.

“He took me to a casino and we went drinking. He made advances on me later on. I had to leave. I was on the freeway on my own facing the night trying to figure out what to do.”

Rob, who now lives in Lambeth, recommends buying the book through his website http://www.onthatlevel.com/book/ which is now available to purchase.
