A Croydon police officer who fought off three terrorists with a baton during the London Bridge attack despite being stabbed in the head has been honoured at the Pride of Britain awards for his efforts.

South Norwood's Wayne Marques was named the winner of the Outstanding Bravery award for his actions during the June 3 attack.

PC Marques had just started his night shift when he heard of the incident taking place.

He ran towards the incident, encountering the attackers and charging at one of the terrorists with his baton, swinging at him to get him away from other victims.

As he fought with the man, he was stabbed in the side of his head by a second offender.

A third man then joined in and the 38-year-old, who had lost the sight in one eye, was stabbed in the leg.

He swung at them as best he could and eventually they ran off into Borough Market.

He sustained stab wounds and underwent operations on his head, leg and hand.

“I am truly moved and overwhelmed to get the award. I’ve always watched the Pride of Britain awards on the television but, never did I think I would be getting one of these awards," PC Marques said.

“Like every police officer who responded, I was simply doing my job. I never expected the level of love and well wishes I have received, not only from people in this country but across the world.

“I feel like I did what any other person would have done and I am so proud of my colleagues from BTP and everyone from the other emergency services who were on shift that night and did everything they could in the face of danger.

“I especially want to thank the officers who saved my life and kept me alive. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”

Chief Constable Paul Crowther said: “I went to the hospital to see PC Marques on the night of the attack and he was lying there on a trolley, having his emergency treatment.

"When he saw me the first thing he said was “I’m sorry that I couldn’t do more – there were too many of them guv.”

“The second thing he said was to ask how his colleague was.

“I think that just goes to show PC Marques’ genuine concern for others, and how he puts his duty above all else."
