A 35-year-old man has been jailed for causing the death of a pedestrian in Croydon after driving dangerously and without insurance.

Patrick Collins, 35, of New Addington, pleaded guilty on Monday (October 23) at the Old Bailey and was sentenced to four years and two months in jail.

The crash happened on February 3 after the van he was driving hit a pedestrian at King Henry's Drive junction with Calley Down Crescent in New Addington.

Selwyn Clarke, 66, was treated by emergency services but he died at the scene.

Collins failed to stop after the crash before he later handed himself in.

He was arrested for failing to stop at the scene and causing death by dangerous driving before later being charged for not having insurance.

Detectives Constable, Steve Cannings, said: "This was a tragic death caused by an individual who had no legal right to drive a vehicle on the road.

"Nothing will bring Mr Clarke back to his family, but I hope today's case brings some measure of closure."
