A wicked witch, a tin man and a Canadian mountie were just some of the characters seen riding through Wimbledon Village yesterday.

A total of 19 riders from Wimbledon Village Stables dressed up in fancy dress and took to their trusty steeds to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer charity.

And so far more than £10,000 has been raised.

Costumes were judged by Bill Rowland and Stephen Bound from the Wimbledon and Putney Commons, and the winners were:

1st Place- Rachel as Wicked Witch of the West riding Bertie

2nd Place- Ainslie as Canadian Mountie riding Hudson Bay

3rd Place- Terry as Tin Man riding Merlin

The rider of the day - 11-year-old Rose who was taking part in her first sponsored ride.

The riders' ten-mile course traced a route across the beautiful scenery of Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park.

Day Two of the fancy dress parade is due to take place tomorrow.

The Wimbledon Village Stables (WVS) Charity ride has been running for the past 41 years and has raised more than £500,000 for various national and local charities in that time.
