A man caught up in “terrifying” clashes between police and yobs in Rosehill has spoken of his 21st birthday celebrations being ruined.

The man was leaving his party at St Peter’s social club in Bishopsford Road at around 11.30pm on Saturday (October 14) to continue the celebrations in Sutton with friends and family.

Unfortunately his group got caught in bother as trouble flared when 100 youths clashed with police.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: “Me and my family went outside and all of a sudden we saw blue flashing lights.

“We had some taxis waiting for us. As it was all kicking off my mates got into a cab. These people kicked two of my friends out of the taxi.

“One was a girl and they pulled her out and kicked her in the ankle. They punched and kicked my other mate in the face.”

The Sutton man described being with his nieces and his sister's friends who were “petrified”.

“It was absolutely mental. There was 100 of them and only 20 or 30 of us.”

The birthday party group quickly went back to the social club where they were let back in to hide.

“They are a bit traumatised,” he commented about his friends who were attacked. “We have not been able to sleep the last two nights.

“I spoke to one of them yesterday. They are alright but it was very, very scary.”

According to the man, the trouble died down around 1pm.

“It unfortunately ruined a really good night,” he added.

One man was arrested during the incident for a public order offence.

A police spokesman added: "Officers attended the location and dealt with a group of youths, a number of whom threw fireworks.

"LAS attended as a precaution; however we are not aware of any member of the public injured.

"A police officer sustained a minor injury, but the officer did not require hospital treatment."
