Sixty one new council homes across Battersea, Putney and Tooting are taking shape, with one development approaching completion.

One of the three sites on the Patmore and Savona estates, where 57 new council homes are in development, is being built and a project in Stewarts Road, Battersea, has reached two storeys.

The expected timeline of the developments, which are situated close to Battersea Power Station, should be completed in the summer of 2018 with priority given to estate tenants who wish to downsize from overcrowded households.

Once the households are moved in then the homes which are vacated will be offered to residents in need, with the homes being named after local First World War soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross.

For instance, the three developments in Haine Court, Lascelles House and Edward Foster Court, are named after Second Lieutenant Reginald Haine, Captain Arthur Moore Lascellles, and Corporal Edward Foster, who all received the highest armed forces honour for gallantry in the face of the enemy.

In addition, two new three-bedroom semi-detached houses in Limpsfield Avenue, near Wimbledon Common, are in the final stages of completion and include high-efficiency boilers and photovoltaic panels to reduce energy bills.

Meanwhile, Nutwell Street in Tooting has two new three-bedrom, semi-detached council houses which are being built and should be completed later this year and will be offered to people who are on the council’s housing register.

Councillor Clare Salier, cabinet member for housing, said: “For many years Wandsworth has built new council homes through its Hidden Homes programme on under-used plots of land, an approach which other local authorities have since taken up.

“However, we recognise that we need to do more to provide local homes and have tasked officers not just to deliver the 260 homes in the pipeline but to identify other sites where homes for rent and for sale, prioritised for local residents and workers, can be built.”
