Domino's is set to open a new store in South Norwood.

A planning application to convert the building at 51 Portland Road into the pizza shop chain was approved this week after nearly two months of waiting.

The site is a former bakery and has been vacant since around June 2014.

In a letter to Croydon Council, Sophia House from DPP Planning - the agency in charge of the application - said the store would give a financial boost to the area.

"The application site has been vacant for almost three years, contributing nothing positive to the local economy," Ms House said.

"Contrastingly, the beneficial reuse of the unit as a takeaway will, if consented, be realised at the earliest opportunity encouraging additional economic activity.

Whilst there are several hot food takeaway operators on Portland Road, the overall number on Portland Road is not considered to cause material and significant harm to the vitality and viability of the area.

"In fact, it is argued that such a use will bring significant benefits, from both an economic development perspective (both in terms of jobs and evening economy) and vitality and viability (bringing a vacant unit back into beneficial use) perspective."

There is no word yet on when the store will open.
