A Norwood man has been jailed for life after being found guilty of attempted murder.

The Old Bailey heard today (September 15) how Reece Davis, 24, who was already serving a sentence for previous offences, escaped from his escorts when visiting University Hospital Croydon for a medical complaint on May 5, 2016. Davis was an inpatient at the medium-security wing of Bethlem Royal psychiatric hospital at the time.

While he was on the loose, Davis stole two knives from Sainsbury's in Crystal Palace and then repeatedly stabbed a complete stranger who was out jogging on Belvedere Road.

Officers attended and a 32-year-old man was taken by London Ambulance Service to a south London hospital to treat to his injuries. He has since been discharged.

Davis was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 14 years. Davis will remain at Broadmoor secure hospital until he is well enough to go to prison.

DC Lane from Bromley CID led the investigation. He said: "This was a very serious offence involving a dangerous man and that is reflected in the sentence passed today.

"I hope the sentence provides some comfort to the victim who has suffered greatly as a result and bravely gave evidence at the trial. I would also pay tribute to the efforts of the police and paramedics who attended the scene to treat the horrific injuries suffered by the victim."
