Muslims in Sutton and Epsom have come together to raise money for victims of June’s Grenfell Tower fire in Kensington.
The Sutton Central Masjid was inspired to help generate funds when they heard about the tragedy in the news.
A spokesman said: “As soon as we saw the images of people out on the street we thought that we must do something.
“We asked all the people that come here to pray to donate. We didn’t expect to raise so much.”
They also approached two other mosques – the Muslim Cultural and Welfare Association of Sutton and the Epsom and Ewell Islamic Society to support the fundraiser.
A cheque will be presented to Mayor of Sutton Jean Crossby, MP for Carshalton and Wallington Tom Brake and Cllr Trish Fivey on October 4 at the Sutton Central Masjid.
Cllr Fivey said: “We did a peace march with the mosque on July 1. It was there I found out about the fundraiser.
“They are really friendly and community based. A lot of effort has been committed between the three Islamic centres to collect the sum of over £3,000. It is very generous.”
