Vandals in Sutton have attacked cars belonging to elderly residents.

Police were called to apartments on Monday morning (August 14) after vandals appeared to target cars and the entrance to a building.

The incidents occurred in Barton Court and Durston Court in Grove Road in Sutton.

A Met Police spokesman said: “This was reported about seven o’clock this morning. A number of cars were vandalised on Grove Road in Sutton.

“Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made.”

Elaine Gay, 67, has lived in Barton Close for 17 years.

She told Sutton Guardian: “It’s disgusting. I have seen nothing like this before. I can’t afford to get my car fixed.”

According to Elaine, vandals have been targeting Barton House since last month.

She said: “I came home from holiday on July 12 and all of the doors on my car had been scratched. The police came on July 14.”

She also claimed that the keyholes to the flats had been damaged by glue last month with new keys recently being provided.

Her neighbour, John Wass, 75, said: “The vandals have to be stopped. Moat should put gates up to stop people from just walking in. We want CCTV cameras too.

“People are frightened. We have people aged 96 who are living here. Residents are nervous wrecks.”

Both John and Elaine were woken up by police on Monday morning as they were told about the damage to their cars.

Moat said in a statement: "We are aware of the incident at Barton Court and are working in partnership with the local police to deal with the issue. A representative from Moat has been visiting the site since the incident to reassure any concerned residents."
