Campaigners behind a proposed tram system linking Kent and Essex are ‘optimistic’ following the backing of experts involved in the project and enthusiastic public support.

One of the minds behind the Kenex tram Link has spoken about the positive response they have had during the project's feasibility study.

James Willis, Liberal Democrat transport campaigner and one of the leaders in the project, told News Shopper that despite being in early stages the idea has generated a lot of support.

He said: “We have met with local authorities and Ebbsfleet have expressed an interest.

“We are optimistic at the levels of enthusiasm shown by local residents, experts and stakeholders.

“This would be a solution to the levels of pollution and health risks in the three boroughs, Gravesham, Dartford and Thurrock, where pollution levels are at their worst.”

The Kenex tram project would see three lines linking Bluewater, Ebbsfleet Garden City, the proposed London resort and Grays station in Essex.

News Shopper:

The estimated costs at this point are £600m.

The project has received the backing of Gordan Pratt of London and Southern Counties Railway Consortium and Professor Lewis Lesley, the founder of one the UK’s other tram projects the Preston Tram.

James said that with the government under pressure from groups such as ClientEarth to tackle air pollution, this project would be a solution for the south east.

He said: “Healthy air campaigner Andrea Lee spoke at an event earlier this month. Residents are enthusiastic about trams, they like the idea of them. People know they are better for the environment.

“The feasibility study is going well and we expect to have more details about costs and routes in August.

“What I would say is that based on other similar projects and the early stages of our feasibility study, this would cost 1/10th of the Lower Thames Crossing.”
