The roof of Sutton Council’s Civic Office building has been installed with solar panels in a bid to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.
By 2025 the council has committed to becoming a One Planet Borough under their One Planet Sutton scheme.
A 40kw system comprised of 150 panels are now built into the rooftop cooling towers.
Cllr Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environment and Neighbourhoods Committee, said: “Over the past seven years the council has invested more than £1.5million in improving the energy efficiency of its buildings.
“To continue its efforts in reducing carbon emissions and improving the environmental performance of its buildings, the council has now launched a programme of renewable energy installations.”
An additional 340kw of panels to other council buildings and social housing are promised for the coming year.
