A Sutton primary school has appointed a former pupil as its new headteacher.

Fiona Oastler will be the new head of Devonshire Primary School from next term and will become only the fourth headteacher in the school’s history.

Current head Martin Kearsey will retire after 34 years in the profession.

Miss Oastler had been working as Deputy Headteacher before obtaining the new job.

She said: “I have such fond memories of starting my school life at Devonshire. Little did I realise I would one day be the headteacher at the school.

“Many things have changed over the years, but one thing has remained constant – giving children the best possible start in life, in a warm and supportive environment.

“It has been a great experience working alongside Martin for the past 10 years, and I am thrilled to be following in his footsteps. I wish him a very happy retirement.

“Next year, it will be 50 years since the school opened and we are looking forward to celebrating this very special anniversary.”

Departing head, Mr Kearsey, added: “I am not planning to put my feet up too much. I have already signed up for some courses at Sutton College. Gardening, decorating, writing and acting will feature prominently, as will spending time with my beautiful granddaughters.”

The school has been opened since 1968.
