A street party packed with performances of singing, music and dance marked the reopening of Surrey Street over the weekend.

The event followed the recent completion of the first phase of the £1.1m works on the street.

Celebrations kicked off with a performance from Celtic band Homebrood who paraded from North End to Surrey Street. Indian dance group Aspara Art and singers Dan Olsen, Rachel Sian, The Lollipops and Serenade Band also took to the stage during the event.

“The Surrey Street launch was a fantastic way to celebrate the improvements that have been made and the return of the 700-year-old market to its rightful place in the town centre," Councillor Mark Watson said.

"I’ve had lots of excellent feedback from people who have praised the art installations and said the changes have made the market more accessible.

"I’d encourage residents and Croydon visitors alike to come to Surrey Street whether it’s to shop, look at the art or relax, and help make the street the beating heart of Croydon.”
