Croydon's Council leader has sent a message to the borough's Muslim population ahead of the start of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Councillor Tony Newman said: "I would like to send my very best to the Muslim community on the forthcoming occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr."
"The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr is the most important day in the Muslim calendar. It brings together people from across the community to mark the end of fasting during the month of Ramadan. The start of Eid-ul-Fitr will be determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon and is predicted on the evening of Sunday 25 June.
"Eid-ul-Fitr is a time for charity and helping those less fortunate than ourselves, both in our communities and elsewhere in the world.
"Celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr and other major faith events together helps us to understand each other’s customs and traditions and develop a culture of mutual respect.
"Traditionally, it’s also a time to pause and reflect on what we can all do to help those less fortunate than ourselves, both within our own community and elsewhere in the world.
"There will be a number of celebrations to mark Eid taking place over the next few weeks in Croydon and across the capital.
"I hope that this will be a joyful occasion for all."
