Fire safety concerns with Hersham Village Hall have led to the building being closed indefinitely.

Elmbridge Council is assessing a survey of the site and will create plans to continue to provide a facility there in the long term.

The adjoining Hersham Centre for the Community will close temporarily on June 28 for fire safety improvements.

Work will begin at the start of July, and is expected to take six weeks.

Councillor Stuart Selleck, leader of the council, said: “The closure of the hall is to be seen as a temporary situation as the Council assesses all the options available to provide community facilities in Hersham.

“Community Centres are important and essential to the fabric of our communities. We have seen from the success of the Molesey Centre that our centres are real community hubs providing the residents of the area not only with a variety of lifestyle activities but also offering support and friendship to the older and more vulnerable people in our community.

“We will work to ensure that we continue to offer facilities that make a real difference in our community.”

The council has apologised for the inconvenience to groups and people who use the facilities.

Users of the Village Hall can call the community halls booking officer on 01932 254750 to discuss alternatives, or the council’s leisure facilities manager, Liz Taylor, on 01372 474580.
