Sutton Council has issued a statement about its own high-rise buildings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.

In her statement the council's housing, economy and business committee chairman, councillor Jayne McCoy directly addressed Chaucer House and Balaam House after residents have voiced their concerns about the fires safety of the buildings.

Cllr McCoy confirmed that both of these buildings were fitted with cladding.

She said: “Our records show that the cladding comprises different materials than that was reported to have been used at Grenfell Tower, with mineral fibre insulation used at Chaucer House, and galvanised steel used at Balaam House.

“Vertical and horizontal fire breaks were incorporated into the design of these systems.”

These are the only high rise properties in Sutton that were fitted with cladding, according to Sutton Council.

“Sutton Housing Partnership staff will also be undertaking daily visits to Balaam and Chaucer Houses to identify any issues of concern and to provide reassurance,” added Cllr McCoy.

A review of fire safety in eight blocks will be carried out by Sutton Housing Partnership.

The statement read: “We do not intend to wait for the outcome of any inquiry or new Fire Building Regulations to trigger any works required as a result of this review.

“Both Chaucer House and Balaam House have been fully refurbished and the works were designed and delivered by a recognised major surveying and engineering consultancy and contractor.

“The Chaucer House project went considerably beyond the regulatory requirements and included the installation of fire alarms and the retrofit of a sprinkler system, one of the first in a residential tower in the UK."

London Fire Brigade offers a free home fire safety visit which can be booked through their website.

If residents still hold concerns they are urged to contact Sutton Housing Partnership.
