Custodians of Wimbledon Common say car parking may no longer be free.
Windmill car park is increasingly being used by people not even visiting the Common, conservators say.
Although free parking has been integral to welcoming visitors to the Commons, charging is one of the ways in which many open spaces across the UK, such as those managed by the National Trust or the Forestry Commission, raise much-needed additional funds.
A pilot scheme in which drivers voluntarily contribute towards parking is now being considered.
The consultation will close on July 14, after which views will be considered by the Board.
