A Sutton woman has begun collecting Lego cards and accompanying Lego collectors' books to donate to children who were involved in the Grenfell Tower fire.

Kayleigh Steptoe told Sutton Guardian: “Basically I have two daughters and they are collecting Lego cards from Sainsbury’s and I thought it would be nice to get them together for the children.”

She added: “It’s not a lot but it’s a big thing for children, we want to collect all of the 140 cards and we want to add in sweets and things.”

The cards contain all of the Lego characters with the book being similar to a sticker book.

“You just want to help and you can donate money but there isn’t much children can do with that,” Kayleigh said.

“Even if we can distract children for half an hour that will be worth it.”

Kayleigh said that the response has been “amazing” with people being “very willing to help”.

Cards can be collected at Sainsbury’s but Kayleigh stressed that “it is hard to get more but there is still a few floating about and people have been sending what they have”.

Kayleigh wants to also put bags together containing things like pencils and colouring books.

“These kids have lost everything,” Kayleigh said.

A Sainsbury's Lego Swap Group statement said: "The huge fire in London has taken everything from those families. One of our very generous members Kayleigh has suggested we make some books up and send them to the children who have been left with nothing.

“This isn't going to change their lives but as there is so many pages raising money for them and companies/church groups collecting donations of clothes, food and toys etc. It would be nice for us to send the children involved a little extra.”

If you have anything you would like to donate Kayleigh encouraged for you to get in touch with her.

She asked that people email her on Kayleighsteptoe@yahoo.com or contact her through Facebook and she is willing to meet up with people to collect donations.

The cards are put into elastic bands to allow children to place them in the book themselves.
