A man in his 70s has died after a fire at sheltered accommodation in Dartford.

Eight other residents were taken to hospital after the fire broke out.

A further twenty patients were treated at the scene in Barn End Lane by the South East Coast Ambulance Service.

Eight fire engines were sent to the sheltered housing at about 7.30am today and rescued five occupants.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus put out a fire in a flat using hose reels and main jets.

Nine ambulances, paramedics from the Hazardous Area Response Team and Kent Air Ambulance were also dispatched.

A major incident was declared at Darent Valley hospital and members of the public were advised to find alternatives to A&E.

None of the people taken to hospital are believed to be in a 'serious' condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
