A 'serious' fire near a hospital caused part of a main to be closed in Broad Green this morning.

The underground fire just south of Croydon University Hospital at 4.43am is now out, and the stretch of the A235 London Road between Stanley Road and Pemdevon Road has been re-opened.

It had been closed while emergency services attended.

An electrical inspection kit was damaged by the fire, a London Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.

The 60, 64, 109, 198, 250 and 289 bus routes were all affected, Transport for London advised.
