The man whose body was found in the Thames at Shepperton last Friday, June 2, has been identified.

Today police have confirmed his identity as Alan Jones, 66, of Shepperton.

Police were called at around 12.15am by someone reporting seeing a man entering the river.

Mr Jones’s body was recovered from the water near Russell Road at around 2am after a search by police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

The post-mortem examination determined he had drowned.

A 47-year-old man, believed to have been known to Mr Jones, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He has since been released from custody but remains under investigation.

Police would like to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in Shepperton on the evening of Thursday, June 1, and the early hours of Friday, particularly between 10pm and 1am.
