In the run-up to the general election we asked the Lewisham West and Penge parliamentary candidates what issues are most important in the area.

With two days to go until polling day here are the matters that mean the most to your candidates.

Ellie Reeves – Labour

Education

"If elected, I will immediately address the urgent problems at Forest Hill School and engage the Secretary of State for Education. I have already been in dialogue with parents and the council about ensuring we get everyone together to talk.

"I will address the issue that Bromley has the second worst GCSE results among all London boroughs for children on free school meals."

Transport

"We must improve transport links. I will fight proposed cuts to Thameslink services and support the efforts to bring the Bakerloo line to the Hayes train line. I support bringing London trains under control of TfL."

Housing

"Many people have contacted me about the poor condition and high cost of housing.

"Labour will step up building of affordable housing and I’ll support projects already underway in Lewisham. I will also fight for residents suffering at the hands of neglectful landlords.

Karen Wheller – Green Party

Housing

"Ensure enough new homes are being built to house our population, bring in rent controls, ensure there are certain standards that both private and social housing adhere to so people have a good quality of home to live in. Scrap the bedroom tax with immediate effect.

"End the sell-off of council housing and end right to buy to ensure we always have a stock of social housing. Reinstate housing benefit for under 21s."

Air Pollution

"Work towards improving public transport links to encourage more cars off the road - for example, lobby to have the Bakerloo line extended to Bromley and for the Tramlink to extend into Crystal Palace. Look at bringing in more hybrid and electric buses.

"Offer discounted travel for public transport, particularly for younger people to encourage more use of it. Encourage the bringing in of a 'Clean Air Act' to work on cleanign up our air, and possbily extend the London Low Emission Zones.

Education

"Our education system at the moment is in a crisis, teachers are overworked and unsupported. Real term spending per pupil should increase.

"Bring academies and free schools back under local authority control, ensure they are held to the same standards as local authority schools. Scrap tuition fees and student loan debts for university students. Restore the Education Maintenance Grant scheme."

Hoong Wai – UKIP

News Shopper:

Crime

"I believe the increase in crime is caused by a combination of societal breakdown and the reduction of policing.

"UKIP would inject £600 million into the policing budget and bring in an additional 20,000 police officers."

Social care

"I would put pressure on the government and argue strongly for social harmony by improving integration and advocating stronger family values.

"Closer families would also reduce the cost of social care to the public purse. UKIP would stop cuts to care budgets and disability benefits, and also increase carers allowance to match the jobseekers' allowance."

Education

"As population increases, schooling is put under increased pressure, and the government targets only further the bureaucratic burden on teachers.

"In addition the UKIP policies set out above, I would campaign for increased numbers of schools so that individual schools are smaller but much more numerous and local. This would encourage integration within schools, as large schools tend to increase segregation due to the formation of cliques."
