Travellers have set up camp in Richmond with more than 20 caravans being spotted.

The travellers were spotted on Wednesday (May 30) by residents who reported seeing the caravans and horses grazing amongst horse boxes, vans and cars in Old Deer Park.

Dog walker Seamus Joyce told the Richmond and Twickenham Times: "I walked my dog on Tuesday night and they weren't there. At maybe midday on Wednesday, there were a lot of caravans.

"They were doing wheelies around Old Deer Park. There was about 20 caravans and horses running around the park."

Mr Joyce added: "I have been in Richmond since 1999 and it is the first time I have seen caravans in the area."

A Richmond Council spokesman said: “Richmond Council does not tolerate anyone who illegally accesses our parks and when people do – we take swift, decisive action.

“We visited the site last night (May 31) with the police.

“The police have served the travellers a notice under section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 requiring them to leave the land within 24 hours.”
