Upmarket supermarket chain Marks and Spencer could be heading to North Cheam after leaflets outlining plans for its development were distributed to residents.

Westminster-based developer PPR Estates’s leaflet detailed its proposal to build an M&S Foodhall, five homes above the store and 39 car parking spaces in 673, London Road – which is currently occupied by Evans Autos.

The plans include the demolition of the existing garage and building the two-storey structure on the site.

Residents shared their thoughts about the plans on Facebook after the developer distributed flyers to homes near the site.

Kathleen Shortall said: “My life is complete. Starbucks, Costa and now this. All we need now is a good pub.”

But Yvonne Nicholson was sceptical and commented she did not think the chain would stay open in the area for long.

She said: “They tried an M&S Foodhall in Worcester Park where Poundland is now, it only lasted a short time. Apparently, it didn’t get the custom - yet it’s near the large more expensive houses on the other side of the railway line.

“I can’t see it lasting in North Cheam.”

PPR Estates has been approached for comment regarding the proposal.
