Two cars have crashed into each other on the corner of Lower Downs and Kingston Road this morning.

Police say they were called at 8.33am to the junction. Local councillors have been petitioning for changes to the road layout on this corner for several years.

Dundonald ward councillor Michael Bull says he fears there will be similar incidents of this nature at the junction without a layout improvement.

He said: "It is hugely disappointing that there has been yet another incident at this junction. Local residents and us local councillors have been demanding for years for this junction to be investigated and made safer.

"The recent development opposite the junction was a perfect opportunity to lay out a roundabout or come to an alternative solution but Merton Labour failed to take this opportunity.

"In the wake of yet another incident at this junction I formally demand that the administration takes immediate action here to keep Merton residents and pedestrians safe on our roads."

The crash is currently causing traffic congestion in Wimbledon Chase.

There are no reported injuries.
