Ambulances have been redirected away from Croydon University Hospital this morning amid work to fix electrical mains.

More disruption was caused at the hospital in London Road today (May 22) to ‘permanently resolve’ the power failure in the A&E department, which saw the unit run on emergency generators earlier this month.

Emergency services were redirected to neighbouring hospitals; St George’s, St Helier, Kingston, King’s College and Princess Royal over a four hour period, starting from 3am.

A Croydon University Hospital Spokesman said: “Following a power failure at the beginning of May, further engineering work is needed to permanently resolve the mains electrical supply to the Emergency Department (Accident & Emergency) at Croydon University Hospital.”

“To enable us to complete the work the Emergency Department will be closed for a maximum of four hours on Monday 22 May, starting at 3am. During this time, ambulances will be diverted to neighbouring hospitals St George’s, St Helier, Kingston, King’s College and Princess Royal.

“Completing the work early in the morning makes any disruption of walk-in care very unlikely and, to ensure this care, a dedicated clinician will be assessing walk-in patients when they arrive.”

Services have since returned back to normal.
