A mum has praised the Tooting hospital that saved the lives of her twin boys.

Sarah Rose had to wait 14 hours before she could hold her newborn sons Isaac and Lucas for the first time after emergency treatment at St George's Hospital.

Sarah, 38, was overjoyed when she was told that she had fallen pregnant with twin boys.

She said: “When we had the 12 week scan and found out there were two babies we were shocked and ecstatic. We always wanted twins, my husband even dreamt that we were having twins.”

It was at the 18 week scan, at Frimley Park Hospital that Sarah and her husband of four years, Kevin, received devastating news that boys, Lucas and Isaac had a life-threatening condition called Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome.  This causes an imbalance of blood cells between foetuses.

The second time mum was rushed to St Georges Hospital in Tooting for life-saving treatment.

It left the twins with a chance of survival as low as ten per cent. Sarah said: “In my mind there is no other option, you see how much you’re in love with your babies you haven’t even met.”

As the operation was carried out under local anaesthetic, Sarah was conscious throughout. She said: “One of the twins kept putting their hands up in the air, I could see it on the camera it was amazing.”

Although the surgery was a success, it made the twins more susceptible to another foetal blood cell condition - Twin Anaemia Polycythemia Syndrome - which saw Sarah go under the knife a second time.

After a long battle the boys were born on July 2 last year and rushed to intensive care. Lucas weighed 3lb111oz and Isaac weighed 4lb.

Sarah, a civil servant, said; “The boys were whisked away, I got to kiss them but I didn’t get to see them or hold them till much later on.

"After a week’s wait, it was amazing to bring them home.

"It was a relief so we could finally start family life, we are very lucky, although we have a long road to get through.

"Isaac is calm and loves his food and Lucas is definitely a mummy’s boy

The NHS saved my boys lives.”
