Two iconic red phone boxes on Richmond Green are all set for a revival.

This is thanks to the Business Improvement District (BID) which officially launched last year and will see funds raised through a local levy to enable businesses to have a greater say in how the town is managed.

One of the first items of business is the restoration of the two vintage phone boxes, located on The Green junction with Golden Court and Paved Court.

With the council and the Red Kiosk Company already signing off on the project, restoration is well under way and will be ready for the Richmond May Fair, this Saturday (13th May).

Economic Development Officer for Richmond Council Sean Gillen was brimming with pride at the work that’s transpired.

“The Richmond BID has launched with a bang,” she said.

“There are not many traditional phone boxes left in the borough.

“As a glowing symbol of British heritage they’ll become part of the visual townscape which is an important part of building the town’s distinctiveness and marketing potential – ultimately playing a part in attracting visitors to the town.”

Chairman of Richmond BID Erick Kervaon said over the next five years BID will invest £3.2m in undertaking other similar and larger initiatives. He added BID would “use this money to achieve maximum tangible benefits for business and the wider community.”
