A heritage marketplace and open-air cinema will help people connect with Merton’s past at a Heritage Discovery Day.

The day, at Morden Library from 12.30pm to 4.30pm on Saturday, May 13, will allow visitors to delve into an exhibition of historic images of bygone Merton as well as discover family war stories.

There will also be children’s activities including block printing, archaeology and tambourine workshops.

A heritage marketplace will feature stalls and displays from 22 organisations, including museums, history societies, genealogists, archaeologists and community groups while an open air cinema outside Merton Civic Centre will show historic films provided by the London Screen Archives.

The programme also features talks and workshops about the Merton Priory Chapter House, Mitcham Cricket Green, African communities in Merton and reminiscences of the St Helier Estate.

Merton Council’s director of community and housing, Simon Williams, said: “Merton has a rich heritage and this discovery day is a fantastic opportunity for the whole family to learn more about the borough’s history.

“Find out what life in Merton was like in the past and how the memories and archives are being preserved for future generations.”
