A would-be mugger slashed a woman with a shard of broken glass in an attack over the bank holiday weekend.

The victim suffered cuts during the terrifying attack and managed to hold onto her bag after her attacker tried to steal it.

She was approached by a man in an alleyway leading from Chessington Road, Ewell, opposite the Spring Tavern, and comes out on London Road at about 4pm on Sunday, April 30.

The man tried to steal her bag and then attacked her with broken glass before she escaped, Surrey Police stated.

The force is now investigating and is looking for a pale white man, who is about six foot tall, aged in his late 30s or early 40s, of broad build with broad shoulders, has dark eyes, a mole on the right side of his cheek and light brown facial hair.

The man was wearing a black hooded top with a white logo on the left side of it, black woolly gloves, baggy dark blue jeans, white trainers and a gold bracelet.

Detective Constable Erin McCauley said: “This was a terrifying incident for the victim who bravely resisted the attempts by the man to steal her bag.

“She has been able to provide us with an incredibly detailed description of the man we want to talk to and I would urge the public to let us know if you have any idea who this person could be or have seen him in the area.

“We would also be interested if you have a dashcam in your car and you drove through the area at the time as this may have captured something of interest to us.”
