There really is no better place to be than Greenwich this summer.

The calendar is packed with event after event even without venturing past the borough’s borders.

While musical acts at the O2 dominate the headlines, food festivals, musical performances and family fetes are scattered across the borough for anyone with a weekend spare.

Whether you feel like being a patron of the arts are looking for a family day out, or want to try out something new and different, you will barely be able to find a space in your diary to attend everything on offer.

1. Urban Village Fete at Greenwich Peninsula on May 21

This hipster-friendly fete is back for its third year at Greenwich Peninsula.

It has attracted 25,000 visitors in the past two years and is continuing to grow, with its designer marketplaces and workshops.

The event boasts that it has modern craftsmanship and innovative events with its take on a modern fete.

It will also have street food vendors, music shows and unique pop-up events such as the chance to become a DJ for the day with The Charity Shop DJ.

2. Battle of the Boroughs 5km and 10km Run at Greenwich Park on May 20

Want to know which London borough is the fastest? Here’s your chance to crown your area as the top borough in London when it comes to running.

Starting at 9.30am, 5km and 10km runs will be held at Greenwich Park and rankings will be based on total participation numbers as well as total team placings.

So if you want to prove once and for all that the people of Greenwich are faster and fitter than the people of Newham, now is your chance.

3. Ed Sheeran at The O2 from May 1 to 3

The record-breaking artist has been dominating the charts since his latest album debuted.

All three dates are already sold out but if you look around the internet you can find people selling tickets.

Prices are pretty high though and, if the popup on Viagogo.co.uk is correct when I went to check if I could get tickets, there were 17,000 people monitoring the price of the tickets. But if you were one of the lucky ones, then you’re in for a performance of a lifetime.

4. Greenwich Music Time at Old Royal Naval College from June 30 to July 7

As much as Greenwich was considered the centre of civilisation when Greenwich Mean Time was set up, the same could be said for music with events such as Greenwich Music Time.

Held at the magnificent Old Royal Naval College, overlooking the Thames, this is the fourth edition of this music festival. Acts booked in include Little Mix and The Jackson, with more acts to be announced soon.

5. Take That at the O2 from June 6 to 12

We’ve already mentioned Ed Sheeran, but if the modern musical performer isn’t to your taste, how does watching Take That at the O2 Arena sound?

They have even added two extra dates on the Sunday and Monday, June 11 and 12, to satisfy demand.

Frankly we could have filled this entire list with musical acts of varying genres at the O2 - Kiss, Iron Maiden, Celine Dion, Blink 182 - you are completely spoiled for choice.

6. OnBlackheath music festival from September 9 to 10

The weekend music festival returns to Blackheath this year with the standout act being Travis, performing on Saturday.

The now legendary indie rockers The Libertines will headline on Sunday, while American blues ace Seasick Steve, singer-songwriter Jake Bugg and the soulful KT Tunstall will also take to the main stage.

Previous main stage performances at OnBlackheath have included Massive Attack, Manic Street Preaches and Madness. Tickets to the festival go on sale this Friday, April 28.

7. BP Big Screens: Live opera and ballet screenings at General Gordon Square, Woolwich on June 7, July 4 and July 14

If you have always wanted to try the ballet but don’t want to pay the entry fee, or have to sit in a stuffy theatre and clap politely you’re in luck because you will be able to view live opera and ballet screenings live from the Royal Opera House on the General Gordon Square.

The screenings are The Dream, Symphonic Variations, and Marguerite and Armand by The Royal Ballet, La traviata by The Royal Opera, and Turandot by The Royal Opera.

8. Armed Forces Day at The Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich on June 24

One of the UK's largest Armed Forces Day events returns to Woolwich with free entry and most of the attractions are free too.

Vintage military vehicles, a veteran’s parade and stalls for the armed forces will obviously be there, but the event also includes laser tag and live music.

Being held at the old Royal Arsenal site, it’s set to be a great family day out.

9. Foodies Festival at Blackheath from July 7 to 9

Skip breakfast before you attend this festival of food at Blackheath.

Being held at Circus Field, this feast in the street will be full of stalls selling food and drink of all types.

Celebrity chefs due to attend include Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, Great British Menu winner Adam Simmonds and MasterChef’s Jack Layer, Billy Wright and Tony Todd.

You could also enter a chilli eating competition, drink lots of champagne and collapse on the grass.

10. Star Sixes at The O2, from July 13 to 16

It’s not just music at the O2. You also get the chance to watch Steven Gerrard, Carles Puyol, Michael Ballack, Deco, Robert Pires and Jay Jay Okocha take part in a mini football tournament.

The Star Sixes tournament will feature many more legendary footballers as they take part in this indoor six-a-side tournament.

Each player must be a former fully-capped international, to ensure the highest quality players take part.

The 12-team tournament will take place over four days, including a group phase and full knockout rounds.

There will be a full event around the whole competition making sure there’s always something to do between games.

11. Greenwich Comedy Festival at the National Maritime Museum from September 13 to 17

The magnificent Greenwich Comedy Festival returns to the lawns of the National Maritime Museum in September with five glorious nights of comedy goodness.

This year's line-up has yet to be announced but the organisers promise it will feature the usual array of award-winning comedians.

The programme will be announced and tickets will be on sale soon.
