The "new and improved" £5.4m bus station in East Croydon has been completed after months of renovation, and quickly lambasted as being little better than what came before.

The station, which opened on Friday, April 7, now includes better lighting, public seating and improved pedestrian access.

The rejuvenation was a joint project between Croydon Council and Transport for London.

Residents and commuters have lamented that they cannot see "much of a difference".

Jia Li, 26, who works in luxury, from South Croydon, said: “It is nice, but I can’t see any changes. It is a lot bigger but there should be more room. They should have added glass doors, or a shelter to stop the wind.”

Andrew Jupp, 29, from Selsdon, said: “It looks like the same thing, so it looks like a waste of time. I cannot see any difference, except a couple of seats.

"I get on the 64 bus regularly. They have got rid of the timer that shows when the bus arrives.”

Others though held a different view.

Anne Malone, 65, a retired grandmother from Exeter, said: “I come to East Croydon from Exeter and then change to go to Forestdale once a week. I think that the change is great. There is more space for passengers and there is more seating.”

Councillor Stuart King, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “I am delighted the improvement works to East Croydon bus station are now complete and thank everyone for their patience while the works were carried out.

"East Croydon is one of the main gateways to our town centre and the previous bus station was outdated and difficult to navigate.

"The upgrade has ensured the area around the station is accessible, welcoming and attractive to visitors and residents alike, giving the best first impressions of Croydon.”
