A famous former restaurant just off the A3 could be turned into a drive through petrol station and cafe after plans were submitted to Elmbridge Council.

Euro Garages, which now owns the site of the former restaurant near the Painshill roundabout and has various stations across the country, has submitted plans for a convenience store along with the cafe and petrol station.

The former restaurant buildings would also be demolished as part of the plans.

Rumours have circulated for many years about what goes on at the former San Domenico restaurant on the A3 near the Painshill roundabout.

At one point a strip club and brothel was rumoured to be coming to the site, which has been vacant for 20 years, then people were certain it was a Mafia headquarters and there was also a theory the government was using it as a secret bunker.

But now, in a supporting planning document for the new petrol station, Euro Garages said: "The proposed development would result in the development of an important previously developed gateway site into Elmbridge and London that has been undeveloped for a number of years.

"[It] would bring about economic and social benefits for visitors and the local community and the suite of technical documents which have been submitted in support of the application demonstrate that there would be no unacceptable adverse impacts if planning permission is granted."
