The Wandsworth Liberal Democrats have signed their 1,000th member which makes them one of the largest Lib Dem party groups in the country.

According to the group,  numbers have been boosted by their opposition to a hard Brexit.

Ryan Mercer, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Putney, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be growing so fast.

“We have found that Theresa May’s choice to go for a hard Brexit that yanks Britain out of the world’s largest single market has gone down incredibly badly with local people, who know how this would cost local jobs.

“By fighting to stay in the single market and to give people a say on the final deal, the Liberal Democrats are really increasing support in and around Wandsworth.

“As well as winning the Richmond Park by-election, the Liberal Democrats have won 34 council byelections up and down the country since the referendum. The most any other party has won is three, a real sign that the Lib Dem fightback is on.”

Mr Mercer is pictured above congratulating the 1000th member Sian Hughes-Kroom at a social evening at the Boathouse Inn in Putney.

He said he found from knocking on doors that people are particularly disappointed in the education secretary and Putney MP Justine Greening.

He said: “She campaigned for Remain and long after the referendum was still saying Britain could stay in the single market, but then she completely rolled over and voted for Theresa May’s destructive hard Brexit.

“On the most important issue facing the country in a generation, she voted for something that she knows is wrong and will devastate the local economy.

“It could also tear apart families by the government’s refusal to guarantee the right to remain of EU citizens. That is a disgrace, and she should be ashamed.”

Justine Greening’s office has been contacted for comment.
