A leaking sewage pipe has put residents at risk of flooding.
Thames Water engineers are now working to protect properties along Preston Lane in Tadworth, but disruption is expected until Friday.
Tankers have since been sucking out sewage from the pumping station in Downsway Close.
Without this, sewage would spill out of the leaking pipe, potentially damaging the environment and back up through the wider network of pipes putting homes and businesses at risk of flooding, a Thames Water spokesman said.
Regional manager, Carl Leadbetter added: “As soon as we knew the sewer pipe was leaking, we quickly put the tankers to work to protect our customers and the environment from being flooded with sewage, which is one of the most horrendous experiences anyone can have.
“We understand the tankers going backwards and forwards are a nuisance and we’re sorry for that.
“We’ve visited those living nearby and hope they understand why we need them and how this is better than the alternative of being flooded.”
