Mystery surrounds a stabbing in Thornton Heath in the middle of the day on Monday.
Police and London Ambulance Service were called to reports a person being stabbed in Virginia Road shortly before 12.30pm.
But officers and paramedics arrived to find no one at the scene.
Officers have since confirmed that the victim later took themselves to a south London hospital suffering stab wounds.
Croydon police are appealing for witnesses.
