A train carriage was evacuated and services have come to a grinding halt at West Croydon station after a fire broke out on a train.

Two fire engines from Croydon fire station were called to the incident at around 2.30pm this afternoon.

All lines are currently blocked at the station and no Sutton to Selhurst services are running.

It took firefighters almost 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

No services, as a result of the incident, are currently running between East Croydon and London Bridge.

British Transport Police were called to the scene. A spokeswoman said they do not at this stage believe the incident is suspicious.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said: "We were called at 2.35pm to West Croydon railway station to reports of a fire on a train.

"One carriage was evacuated before the arrival of the brigade.

"Ten per cent of the carriage was damaged by fire. The incident was over for us at 3.03pm.

"Two fire engines from Croydon attended."

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Southern rail posted on Twitter: "Due to a fire earlier at West Croydon all lines are currently blocked."

Tickets are being accepted on Croydon trams and buses.
