As Wandsworth residents lead the way in car club membership, more are being encouraged to sign up and "experience the benefits for themselves".

Memberships of car clubs in Wandsworth, which allows people to rent a car minutes or hours at a time, are approaching 14,000.

The service can also be friendlier to the environment than car owning, with a large selection of electric cars on offer.

According to shared transport charity Carplus, for every person who signs up to the service, 10 privately owned cars are taken off the road.

The charity also estimates drivers could save £3,500 per year compared to owning a car if you drive fewer than 6,000 miles per 12 months.

Wandsworth Council’s transport spokesperson Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "I’m delighted that Wandsworth residents are leading the way in car club membership, and encourage local people who haven’t yet tried the service to give it a go.

"Car clubs reduce total vehicle use and take older, more polluting cars off the road, while still giving people the access to transport that they need.

"Using car clubs is a positive change many of us could make, alongside the measures the council is already taking to improve air quality in the borough."
