A team of 20 firefighters have tackled a blaze at a block of flats in Battersea.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) sent four fire engines to the block of flats in Gwynne Road when they were called just after 5pm.

Part of a flat on the second floor of the building was damaged by fire, but no one was injured or inside the building. The LFB were alerted after smoke alarms inside the flats sounded.

A spokesperson for the LFB said: "Thankfully there was no one in the property at the time of the fire and no one was injured, but this incident shows the importance of having a working smoke alarm.

"Smoke alarms provide a vital early warning and buy you extra time to escape if there is a fire.

"Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, and the safest option is have those linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home."

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

The LFB were called at 5.08pm, and the fire was under control at 6.03pm. Fire crews from Battersea, Chelsea, Wandsworth and Lambeth fire stations attended.
