A homeless man’s tent was set on fire while he was inside it.

The victim suffered minor burns to his hands and told officers he heard noises outside his tent just before it caught fire, Surrey Police stated.

Firefighters and police officers were called to woodland near Knoll Roundabout between Leatherhead and Ashtead just before 11am on Monday, January 16.

Firefighters from Leatherhead fire station said the victim declined medical attention and was taken to a homeless shelter.

A spokesman said he believed the victim was inside when the fire was started.

The crew used one hose reel to put out the fire.

Surrey Police has since launched an arson investigation.

Detective Constable Clifford said: “This was a distressing incident for the victim which could have had far worse consequences.

“We are treating it as arson and are appealing to the public for any information that can progress our investigation and help identify those responsible.”
