A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing at a Kingston nightclub.

Police arrested the man in the early hours of this morning and he is being questioned at a south London police station.

"Mikey - not to be forgotten"

Tribute left outside The Works

Mikey Brown, from New Addington, was man stabbed to death at The Works at around 2am on Saturday morning. It is believed the 23-year-old's partner is due to have his child.

He was taken by ambulance to Kingston Hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

A post mortem held at Kingston Mortuary yesterday gave the cause of death as stabbing.

The incident is being investigated by the Homicide and Serious Crimes Command.

DI Alan Baxter said: "We believe there was a fight inside the nightclub in an area called the Boiler Bar.

"We want to hear from anyone who may have been in that area of the club and saw anything of the fight, just before 2am.

"Also, we want to speak to anyone inside, or outside, the nightclub who may have seen or heard anything suspicious or who has any information."

Flowers and tributes have already appeared at the scene.

One read: "Mikey - not to be forgotten," while another said: "Mikey, Just yesterday we were chillin, now you're not here."

David Tse, a waiter at nearby restaurant New Kam Tong, believed the murder revealed the area's growing problems with crime.

He said: "It's been getting worse and worse with all the nightclubs and bars. Our windows get broken every couple of weeks.

"I know the police can't be here all the time as they have other things to do, but the police station is only around the corner."

A spokesman for The Works refused to comment.

However, a statement posted on the club's website yesterday has been criticised for a lack of sensitivity.

It read: "The club is closed tonight, but don't forget we have a fantastic line up this week!"

Anyone with information regarding the incident should call the incident room on 020 8721 4205, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

It’s not a mark of respect. The area is a crime scene. In any event should this club even have a license – how was someone able to bring a knife inside the club? – It should be closed until further notice

Here is website statement: The Club is Closed tonight, but dont forget we have a fantastic line up this week! So is that a mark of respect if so the website does not seem to claim so. You would think they would at least close for a number of days whilst they review security arrangements. I am surprised the police do not force the place to remain closed until the club can prove it is safe and some kind of review takes place. In nay event attendances will be down significantly at the club I myself won’t be visiting until security is fixed!

The club haven't closed its door as a mark of respect the police obviously need to finish their investigations and have prob advised the club to close before being ordered to making everything more official and subjecting the license to review. It's the standard way with licensed premises.
Security is known to be terrible at this place, fights breaking out all the time, "security" ejecting the innocent, theft where staff don't seem to give a ****, the list goes on.
The Works is just another one of the few venues that give clubbing a bad name... tis a shame really as it does have the potential to be a decent place to spend an evening

When I was in Kingston Saturday night I asked one of the bouncers for the works who was standing at the end of the blocked road why the club and road was closed and he told me it was because of the plumbing! How can they be showing respect for anyone when they can't even acknowledge that a young life was taken in there club but instead advertise a fantastic line up on their website?? Can we not even go out to let our hair down anymore with out fear of being stabbed or shot?? Its such a shame and a waste of a young life RIP

Think the blame here doesnt rest with the club or indeed the bouncers. but to the pathetic individuals that find the need to hind behind weapons. If people wish to get a weapon in to a venue be it a club or a airport there is only certain measurements that can be taken. The reason the arent advertising the situation is out of respect also any statements made could jepardise the police investigation and court proceedings. There is 1 person the blame and its the evil individual who took this poor young lad from his family. I do hope justice is carried out with no lenienc. RIP my thought are with the family

Hi,
As sad as it is I am not surprised this happened!
The new doormen do not seem to have a clue how to run things. Fighting in the club has got much worse since they have been there, letting in people that the previous doormen have barred for fighting and causing problems. They do not check womens bags or all the men that pass through. The works needs the old doormen to return. Until then the place is not safe! If they were still there this could have been avoided

I would just like to add one simple thing, as simple as it may seems, i do not think that this club is bad in any sense at all. i have been going to this club week in and week out, and nothing like this as ever happened. i must say since i have been back the The Works nightclub there are all new doorman, and i must add, there is more violence since the old doorman have been there! When all the old doorman( now that have left) were there, i felt so safe, nothing major kicked off apart from the normal occasional fight here and there. Not every doorman is to blame, neither is the club, its the people that want to start fights. so one thing i suggest to stop any of this happening

At the end of the day its the scum bags that are allowed in these clubs that are ruining it for every one else. the bouncers are paid to do a job and they dont, they should be searcing every body that goes in and out and there should be bouncers walking around the club to. there should also be metal detectors. but all the bouncer are doing is standing there flexing there muscles chatting up girls and thinking that there the dogs ****- look at at me im well hard, WELL I HAVE **** NEWS FOR YOU YOUR NOt. maybe if they had got the 2 people and dealt with it as it should have been maybe mikey would have still been here. instead they chucked him and he died. so i do blame The Works and the bouncers and i **** pray to god that the boy who done this gets life its the least he deserves.

I have been going to this club for almost 8 years. There has always been violence at this club and there always will be. Kingston its self has become more of a violent area. I think the club should have its doors closed for good. It's one less place for the police to bother with. People have been stabbed in there before. But this has been the worst obviously! You can't go blaming doormen, police etc all the time. At the end of the day this is what kingston has become. You walk down the street you get abuse from loads of kids. No respect anymore round here! My thoughts are with the family of mikey b.

i go to the works reguly & I have to stick up for the doorman as I know one of them through a friend, they are absolutley gutted that a young man died whilst on a night out & to say they don't care is an insult, some of the doorman have son's of there own... as for the searching policy in the bar they can only stick to club policy every doorman likes a proper search policy as it's safer for everyone includeing themselves.. But all the club owners think about is get the customers in as quick as possible. One of the doorman who was present on Friday told me that there was no way of knowing that the poor guy was stabbed as he did not bleed from his injuries otherwise the doorstaff would have known that they were dealing with a stabbing as some of the staff are trained paramedics they could have tended to his wounds, they all thought that the poor guy had to much to drink.
The club or doorstaff are not to blame it's the scum who carried out the cowardly attack... Our thoughts must go to his family & love ones...R.I.P

I think its apauling that they could let someone get in with a knife on them, the bouncers are all wankers any way there main concern is that there the big man and who can chat up the most girls not looking out 4 trouble that is happening. All it takes is 4 2 of them 2 b walking around and they could of spotted this trouble happening, but they don’t give a **** do they and now an innocent life has been stolen all because they are slack and don’t do there job properly. They are more concerned taking eye liners and chewing gum of girls then looking for weapons, wat kind of security do u call that! I got smacked in the face by a girl in the works and it ended up in a fight, wat did the bouncers do NOTHINK, didn’t even stop it! I think the works should be shut down. If it wasn’t for the police the club would still be open, and they call it being closed as a mark of respect. My thoughts go out 2 his family, and I pray 4 the little boy who will grow up without a daddy. I hope they catch the scum bag that did this and let the boy rest in peace xx.

I add my condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
I hope that the council will keep resisting applications for further clubs and extended licensing - at least until there is a degree of control over the existing problem. Unfortunately it seems to be a long way off - the Australian who called it a zoo is correct although at least in a zoo the animals are behind bars - where a lot of the thugs who invade our lovely town at night should be.

FACTS. Someone obtained admission to the works without a proper search. They were able it appears to carry a large knife capable of murdering someone into the licensed establishment. It appears they were then able to leave the premises without apprehension.

I think it is disgusting. The place should be closed it total filth. I saw the statement the website the day after – it was no mark of respect at all. Goes without saying respect to Mickey this should not have happened especially inside a licensed nightclub. I hope Kingston Police if they have any balls put the matter before the local magistrates as its just disgusting the attitude of this venue. Also has to be said police in Kingston start making an effort forget trying to criminalise people for idiot matter like drunk and disorderly and do ‘targeted’ policing where you target real trouble makers.

The young thug who took this innocent life had a knife he was obviously intending to hurt someone whether it be at the works or not, if he hadn’t of got into the works it would have happened in the street! I don’t believe the club should be closed down, why? What would that achieve, it won’t stop knife crime nor would it bring mikey brown back! The youngster who did this has been caught, justice will be done it wont bring mikey back but 'that thug' is now off our streets! What about that 19 year old women that was knifed in a club In south London also at the weekend should that club also be closed too, what about all the knife crime that’s happened this year alone should we close every single place that a murder has taken place, it wont solve anything! The club needs a stronger search policy and should be made over 21s because it seems to be the younger generation who course most of the trouble at the works. I for one will continue to club there, why shouldn’t I! RIP mikey, my thoughts are with your family at this terrible time. X

The man was in a nightclub. This is a licensed environment. We don’t know how or what the fight was about or how it started. In any event nobody would expect someone to produce a knife capable of MURDER inside a licensed club. Stop trying this BS about if it happened on the street. It happened inside the club. All of us are really angry because the clubs attitude about the stabbing. They have ignored it on their website and behaved like nothing more than scums! There is also a suggestion that the chap was chucked in the street before an ambulance arrived. I have no time for people who want to lick the a*s of the works. It’s a dirty low down dump money making establishment. Extremely lenient/lax security. Allowed someone with what must have been a large blade.

As Kareem says boycott this dump!

M Davis, Kingston says...

And Jimmy re your comments about Swan in Tottenham> I believe license has been revoked. In these kind of circumstances the matter needs to go before magistrates. Clearly there was a major failure/dereliction of duty in relation to security. As I say no-one would expect a knife to come out in a club. I have been to the Granaries in Croydon even they have a metal detector. FFS sort it out. This club should be closed until further notice! BOYCOTT THE WORKS!

Let be clear on this. They have something called a license. To apply for a license you have to undertake something known as “responsibility”. Do not try and say the club has no part in the matter. The man was murdered INSIDE this establishment. Don’t cover up for sh** security/sloppy management or whatever else. Fact is Mikey was slaughtered inside this nightclub. The murderer was admitted due to the gross negligence of the establishment. I hope the family sues the owner. Filthy scumbags burn in hell how can you let a man into a club with a knife you bas**rds. You scum can’t even put a message on your website
I hope they do sue the place and it gets shut down, but no aount of money will compare to the life that has been taken, heobviously had alot look forward to in life.Im glad u feel strongly about these disgracefull bouncers and its about time something is done about it!

When all the old doorman( now that have left) were there, i felt so safe, nothing major kicked off apart from the normal occasional fight here and there. Not every doorman is to blame, neither is the club, its the people that want to start fights. so one thing i suggest to stop any of this happening

I have it on very good authority that the blade was a very small folding lock knief very easily concealed,a knief is only a weapon if it's used as one...think about that...

You cannot blame the club for every single bad person that enters. What are the bouncers to do - strip search every person that enters? Ive only been to the Works a few times and yeah even I think the bouncers are idiots sometimes but they nor the club are not to blame for this. Whoever did this is responsible. And if it didnt happen in the club then whats to say it couldnt of happened outside the club?
Try to get the club shut down and what good will that do? Everyone will move on to Oceana and other places and do you really think that will stop this crazy gang related crime thats taking over this country?! NO I dont think so.

David, Croydon says...
11:14am Tue 26 Jun 07

A few weeks back my friends and I travelled to Kingston intending to go to the Works. Upon seeing some of the rabble in the queue we decided against it and went elsewhere. Appearances can be deceiving, but it really did look like a rough crowd.

Places like Croydon have essentially died as nightspots, in part due to trouble. The net result is that people will go somewhere else instead, and bring that place down. Maybe this is the sign of things to come with Kingston, or maybe it is just an extremely sad blip.

It is easy to blame the doormen, and yes many spend their time chatting up the girls. However, many take their jobs seriously, and no matter how much they walk around things will happen. Fights start for all sorts of stupid reasons, sometimes with both parties looking to go for it, and sometimes with one an unwilling recipient of a beating.

Whatever the case, what has happened can’t be taken back. Hopefully the person who committed the crime will get the punishment he deserves.

M Davis, Kingston says...
1:43pm Tue 26 Jun 07

To those that say you cannot blame the club. Please understand to operate a club/licensed establishment you are a licensee. This has conditions attached and you have responsibility. You make lots of money but when someone is inside your establishment you have a “duty of care” to ensure that visitors safety Now we all know punch up’s happen in nightclubs I have been in some myself. But I always know it’s a punch up – in this case the man must have produced a knife inside and used it. The issue here is that inside the club it’s considered a ‘place of safety’ so to speak. You would never expect that and Mikey would have been in shock himself.

From what we have read so far it appears that the club failed in many aspects.

1) They allowed male/male accomplice in with large knife
2) Fight took place, man stabbed to death – it would appear no intervention by bouncers
3) Man stabbed removed from club and thrown into street. It has been suggested this is because they thought he was drunk. Let me tell you the more probable reason – that they wanted the incident to be classed as taking place outside the club thus excluding themselves from the responsibility of what happened
4) Dies in hospital
5) Club closed since. No statement from management on homepage. It appears initially the money making scums had ideas of re-opening on Monday. They have obviously been told this will not happen

Hopefully the police will put the club before magistrates and get it closed. If this fails I don’t think many people will want to attend a club whose carpets are soaked in blood

If some 1 wants to get a knife some where THEY WILL ! Excuses and blaming is not the answer ! Society need to face up to what is happening and stop with the IF and BUT'S ! Stronger stands need to be made Drinking and clubbing 21 strictly ! The first thing to say is that, as some of you may or may not know, an incident of a serious nature occured at The Works last Friday. It has been taken very seriously, and a man is now in custody. The Works was closed over the weekend as a mark of respect, and our deepest condolences go out to the families of everyone involved.

It should be stressed just how seriously The Works have taken this incident, and one thing that will come out of it is that The Works will be the safest venue in town, bar none. Measures have been taken to ensure nothing like this could happen again.
