A young man gunned down on the streets of Croydon was childhood friends with Crystal Palace football player Wilfried Zaha, who has paid tribute.

Akeem Moore, 22, was killed on Friday, October 7.

He was shot in the head at 11.25pm in Eastney Road, Broad Green, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Premier League footballer Zaha publicly paid tribute to the murder victim, urging fans to donate money to a fundraising page set up in his memory.

Wilfried wrote on his Instagram page: “Truly hurts me to post this but Akeem Moore, a very good friend of mine, whom I grew up with died over the weekend.

“Please help me give him the best send off by donating anything you can to the link on his family Instagram page @akeems.legacy – thank you in advance.”

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Watling, of the homicide and major crime command, is leading the murder investigation.

He said: “I need to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Eastney Road area late on Friday night. I would urge any witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist the investigation, to call police and tell us what they know.”

Police have not yet made any arrests and are continuing their enquiries.
